Sale! Reproduction Church Brass of Dame Jemima Wilson

c1849 - Westminster Abbey

Please click photo for enlargement - Reproduction church brass depicts Dame Jemima (b1777 - d1823), wife of Sir Robert Wilson, much decorated soldier, Governor and Commander in Chief of Gibraltar.

A stunning wall accent, this finely detailed brass is engraved in the style of the Middle Ages as Jemima is seen here, wearing a loose mantle over a wide-sleeved gown showing the close fitting sleeves of the kirtle beneath. With veiled head-dress and hair gathered into nets at the side of her face, Jemima's modest appearance is so similar to Margaret Bellingham's brass in Kendal (restored about 1860) it is assumed both were made at about this time, possibly by the same engraver.

The seven sons and six daughters of the couple are incorporated in the family brass which lies in the North Aisle of the Abbey. (Copyright Clark Paterson, High Wycombe, Bucks, England 1977)

Brasses have been made since medieval times and were used to commemorate the people they illustrate. The originals are mostly found set into floors of English churches & cathedrals. Brasses have taught us much about the development of costume & armour.

Brass rubbing is a simple & attractive way of recording the design and has become an increasingly popular hobby since the age of Queen Victoria. Simply place paper over the figure plate and rub with a metallic colored crayon for a beautiful work of art worthy of hanging.

Brass accented resin mold has been skillfully cast over a wooden base with realistic faux granite background. Measures 14.5 x 5.75" and includes hardware for hanging. Weighs 2.5 lbs. Made in England.
