c1484 - Isleham, Cambridgeshire Please click photo for enlargement - This partial reproduction church brass is of Margaret Bernard Peyton and was taken from the original which, beneath an ornate canopy, depicts Thomas Peyton together with Margaret Bernard, his first wife, and second wife, Margaret Francis, flanking either side. A stunning wall accent, this finely engraved brass shows Margaret wearing a decollete waisted gown of rich Italian brocade, or cut velvet. Her "butterfly" head-dress, fashionable during this period, is worded with the prayer "Lady (Help) Jhu (Jesu) Mercy". Her elaborate necklace is also worn by Margaret Francis, in the original brass, and was thought to have been a family heirloom, but research reveals an identical necklace worn by Isabel Cheyne (Blickling, Norfolk, 1495) and this, together with the position of the hands of all three ladies, points to these brasses having come from the same workshop. The originals are mostly found set into floors of English churches & cathedrals. Brasses have taught us much about the development of costume & armour.
