***Please read this very important information to ensure your walking cane is properly sized, as custom sized canes are not returnable for refund! The following is provided only as a guide for your cane purchase and is in no way intended to substitute for the advice of a physician.
Even if you are using a cane for balance only, it is absolutely crucial that it is of the proper length to avoid possible injury from a fall, as well as unnecessary strain to arm, shoulder, neck or back.
Note that all walking canes are designed to be held perpendicular to the floor before bearing down with your weight, as opposed to being held at an angle which places great strain on parts of the cane which were not intended to bear weight. This can ultimately cause the user's cane to break, or worse yet, result in injury from a fall.
A walking cane that is too long will cause the user to improperly hold it at an angle as mentioned above. A walking cane that is too short can result in a misstep, as well as exaggerated stooping which, over time, can lead to back injury.
Ladies Walking Canes: Our ladies walking canes are generally supplied to us in 35 inch lengths, unless otherwise noted. Additionally, shaft and handle dimensions run a bit more petite than our gents canes. Be sure to note the maximum length in each individual cane's description as we can size them shorter, but unfortunately, not longer than the length stated. *Many of our female clients requiring lengths over 35 inches order from our gents, extra long, and adjustable length collections.
Gents Walking Canes: Our gents walking canes are generally supplied to us in 36 inch lengths, unless otherwise noted. Be sure to note the maximum length in each individual cane's description as we can size them shorter, but unfortunately, not longer than the length stated. Please see our extra long and adjustable length collections for canes over 36 inches.
Adjustable Length Canes: If you're really unsure about the length you need, our adjustable length and folding adjustable length canes will eliminate the guesswork. Some of our ladies models adjust as low as 27.5 inches up to as high as 37 inches. Likewise, some gents models will adjust as low as 30.5 inches, or as high as 40 inches. See individual products for details.
How do I Properly Measure for a Walking Cane?
1. Firstly, you'll want to measure for the arm that will be utilizing the cane. Unless otherwise instructed by a physician, this will generally be the arm opposite the side of the pain or injury, i.e. if pain or injury is to the left hip, leg, knee, ankle or foot, the cane should be used in the right hand. Likewise, if pain or injury is to the right hip, leg, knee, ankle or foot, the cane should be used in the left hand. If, however, the cane is being used primarily for balance, the preferred hand may be used.
2. Standing as straight as possible while the arms hang naturally by your sides with a relaxed, natural bend at the elbow (do not lock the elbows out), have someone measure from the floor up to the first crease on your inside wrist just above the palm. This is where your wrist bends back and forth resulting in a natural, comfortable length. This is the overall length you need including the rubber safety tip. ***Never use a walking cane without a proper rubber tip since canes can easily slip on hard surfaces.
